Meet your teacher

Hi, I'm Sara

I grew up playing Chinese style mahjong around 10 years old — playing with my family and even holding family tournaments! As an adult, my sister introduced me to American Mahjong and I immediately became obsessed, teaching all of my friends! It is now my new favorite hobby, and I want to turn that passion into teaching others so they can discover the joy of this game and create their own mahjong circles.

My favorite part? Watching someone go from “I have no idea what's happening” to proudly declaring Mahjong after just a couple sessions. I keep lessons relaxed, social, and fun — no stress, no judgment, just good company and a great game.

I provide everything you need: tiles, racks, and the current NMJL card. All you need is a table and a willingness to learn.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to own a mahjong set?

Nope! I bring a full set of tiles, racks, and the current NMJL card to every lesson. If you do have your own set, I'm happy to use yours.

Is this for complete beginners?

Absolutely. Most of my students have never played before. I start from scratch and go at whatever pace works for you.

What's the difference between American and other styles of mahjong?

American Mahjong uses the NMJL card (updated every year), has different rules for trading tiles (the Charleston), and uses jokers. It's the style most commonly played in neighborhoods, clubs, and community centers in the U.S.

How many people do I need for a group lesson?

A full table is 4 players, which is ideal. But I can teach groups of 2–4 comfortably. For larger gatherings, contact me about a custom event.

Do you come to my home?

Yes! I teach in-home throughout Steiner Ranch, Lakeway, River Place, and West Austin. All you need is a table and chairs.

How many lessons will it take to learn?

Most beginners are playing real hands by the end of their first session. Two to three sessions is usually enough to feel confident playing on your own.
